Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Minor

Return to Academic Programs Return to: Academic Programs

The Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) minor is an opportunity for Berry students to develop the skills necessary to teach English abroad. The successful completion of the minor prepares graduates to teach English in foreign/second language settings inside and outside formal classrooms.  This minor is an entry-level credential for those seeking to live and teach abroad for a period of time through programs such as the Peace Corps and Fulbright.

For the TEFL minor, students are required to complete 18 hours of coursework: 15 hours of the core courses and 3 hours of electives. The elective course helps students understand the context where the teaching of English is situated as well as issues that may impact or relate to English language teaching and learning. The elective course can be chosen from courses  that address current social, cultural, language, economic, historical, and political issues from a global perspective.
