Classification of Courses


Numbering System

The college course-numbering system is as follows:
100–200 freshman- and sophomore-level courses
300–400 junior- and senior-level courses

Courses offered at the 100 level and 200 level are deemed to be introductory in nature, requiring little or no prerequisite disciplinary preparation in terms of skill or knowledge for student entry into and subsequent success in the course. Courses at the 300 level and 400 level are deemed to be more advanced, frequently requiring prerequisite disciplinary or skill preparation for student entry into and subsequent success in the course. Responsibility for recommending appropriate course levels lies with the department offering the course; if initially endorsed by the appropriate school, the recommendations are forwarded through the schools to the Academic Council for approval for inclusion in the College Catalog

    This course is an introduction to the role of the professional nurse and the Quality and Safety Essentials of Nursing (QSEN) competencies. Critical thinking and clinical reasoning is emphasized in the role of the direct caregiver. Basic nursing concepts are applied to providing direct care, maintaining patient safety, and achieving quality care. Case study presentations, campus/simulated lab experience, and clinical laboratory experiences will be utilized to teach selected knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed for the role of direct caregiver.

  • NUR 321 - Professional Nursing Practice-Families


    4-6-6

    This course introduces the student to the nursing care of childbearing women, infants, children, and their families by building on previous nursing concepts. The nursing process will serve as the organizing framework to examine normal pregnancy and the developing child, common complications during pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period, and major health concerns in children. Theoretical knowledge, clinical practice, and simulated experience will be integrated to prepare students for the nursing roles of direct caregiver, manager, and advocate of health for the childbearing family.

    This course examines nursing care of vulnerable populations. Specific health disparities, many prioritized by Healthy People 2020, will be highlighted and include: mental illness, health risks of older adults, terminal illness, family abuse, lifestyle health threats, and children with medical concerns. Concentration will be placed on application of the nursing process, role of the nurse as patient-centered advocate, and use of interdisciplinary resources. Clinical practice hours include acute and chronic mental health, outpatient oncology, and community-based settings.

  • NUR 424 - Professional Nursing Practice- Leadership and Management

    This senior-level nursing course focuses on leadership development and management for entry-level professional nursing practice. This course emphasizes the role of the professional registered nurse as the manager/designer/coordinator of care as well as member of a profession. This course addresses building cultures quality and safety in complex health care delivery systems based on organizational strengths, using multiple strategies within environmental turbulence and change and managing fiscal resources for cost-effectiveness. Emphasis on key organizational structures, intra- and inter- professional communication and team work, collaboration and conflict resolution, delegation and supervision, workforce motivation, and change processes will be highlighted. Professional issues related to self-care of the nurse, such as work-life balance, healthy work environments, and resource assistance in building a nursing career are also considered.

  • PSY 222 - Concepts/Principles of Applied Behavior Analysis

    This course will focus on the fundamental concepts and principles of applied behavior analysis and behavioral change procedures. The focus will be on the identification of skill acquisition and behavior reduction procedures. In addition, the course will discuss ethical considerations related to behavior analysts’ responsible conduct. The course objectives/learning outcomes are designated to be in line with coursework requirements as outlined by the Behavior Anaylst Certification Board.

    An introduction to different methodological apporaches used in psychology with emphasis on experimental research designs. Topics include single-group, multi-group, and factorial designs, statistical analyses used in experimental research, and using computer programs to manage and analyze data.

  • PSY 298 - Research Practicum


    1 to 3 hours

    Students will be involved in designing experiments, collecting data, scoring data, entering and analyzing the data, formulating future studies and writing reports. Students will learn about the development and execution of research projects. May be repeated for up to six credits. A one-hour weekly research seminar is required.

  • PSY 303 - Health Psychology in Sociocultural Context

    Explores the psychological processes involved in health with a particular focus on the confluence of gender, race and class. Within this context, individual experiences of a variety of health related topics will be covered including sources of stress and stress management, social support, adoption of healthy/risky behaviors, adherence to medical advice, experiences as recipients of health care and coping with chronic illness and death.

    Application of the research and statistical methods covered in PSY 260   and PSY 261 .  Students ethically design, conduct, analyze, interpret, and report empirical research that is framed within the instructor’s area of expertise. Special emphasis is placed on reviewing the scientific literature, data collection and statistical analysis using statistical software, and writing an APA-style manuscript.

  • PSY 371 - Ethics & Professional Issues in Behavior Analysis & Psychology

    Ethics and professional issues in the conduct of behavior analytic and psychological research and practice.  An emphasis is placed on the ethical codes and compliance with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board and the American Psychological Association other related ethics codes, such as the American Counseling Association will also be addressed.  The course will also discuss relevant historical legal precedents that influence current ethics code.  Professional issues such as liability insurance, credentials required for clinical practice, and processes for addressing ethical dilemmas are included.  This course is designed to meet the BACB requirements for the BCaBA course sequence.

    An introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disabilities including intellectual disabilities.  Course discusses core and associated characteristics of ASD and other developmental disorders, the historical framework and underlying theories, diagnostic criteria based on the DSMV and IDEA, early intervention and family supports, diagnostic assessment tools, social communication, behavior, transitioning to the community, and evidence based strategies/programs to promote inclusion and self-determination.
