MUS 240 - Music in Film (Foundations F4b)

3-0-3

An introduction to the critical study of film and moving images, covering basic elements of cinema - construction of the image in the frame, editing, elements of sounds, and narrative strategies.  The course will introduce a number of musical concepts that can be applied to a wide variety of music.  Topics such as themes, thematic transformations, dissonance, timbre, style, and emotions, which are part of many musical experiences, may be more readily grasped in the context of a film than with abstract music.  Students will learn to decipher why the director and composer made certain choices, whether they were successful in achieving their goals, and what alternatives they might have chosen.
