ESS 365 - Film and Environment 3-0-3
This course introduces the field of Visual Anthropology and applies it to environmental themes and subsistence strategies of the past and present. The field of Visual Anthropology studies the use of images and film for the description, analysis, communication and interpretation of human behavior. Visual anthropologists examine visual aspects of culture, including art, architecture and material artifacts, as well as kinesics, proxemics, and related forms of body motion communication (e.g. gesture, emotion, dance, sign language) and produce media in the recording and presentation of ethnographic, archaeological and other anthropological data. We view and critique a range of visual media related to environmental issues and subsistence-base societies and then apply such knowledge to document food procurement and consumption practices in our home region.
