The Environmental Science and Studies (ESS) Department provides students with a unique opportunity for true interdisciplinarity. Just as the fields of Environmental Science and Environmental Studies require collaboration between the social and natural sciences and arts and humanities, the ESS Department literally and figuratively bridges these gaps by working within both the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences and the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences. This type of comprehensive collaboration represents a hallmark of both majors, Environmental Science (EVS) and Environmental Studies (ENV), because the environmental challenges that confront the human species demand holistic understandings and engagements in diverse fields, and coordination rather than isolation. To this end, the ESS Department facilitates genuine community engagement, interdisciplinary environmental research, and diverse hands-on experiences on the expansive Berry campus and beyond.
