A major in Communication prepares students for careers in communication fields with study and practice across media. Covering non-fiction storytelling forms and practices, such as journalism and videography; fictional storytelling, such as filmmaking; and strategic or persuasive communication, including public relations and social media management, majors learn to create messages with impact that reach and influence intended audiences.
The major offers four concentrations:
- Digital Storytelling
- Public Relations
- Filmmaking & Cinematic Arts
- Sports Communication
The goal of the major is to develop in students the capacities for writing, public speaking, visual communication, storytelling, and digital communication, including publishing and digital distribution. While much of the major is applied, the curricular philosophy is grounded in the tradition of the humanities. The common core for majors includes, for example, course work in theory, law, history, and rhetoric.
The Communication major includes 39 hours. Students complete a common core and one of the major’s four concentrations. Because only the bachelor of arts degree is offered for the major, all majors complete the B.A. foreign language requirement. If a student is pursuing Communication as the second of two majors, the first of which is a bachelor of science, the student must still complete the foreign language requirement.
