A major in English requires 39 semester hours plus a final portfolio of work completed for the major. The department offers 200-level courses to introduce students to British, American, and world literary traditions as well as methods of literary research and analysis. Courses at the 300-level concentrate on specific historical periods, genres, minority literatures and authors, while courses at the 400-level provide opportunities for in-depth study of literary texts.
In addition to completing 39 hours in English studies, students are required to develop a portfolio of written work that represents significant successes in their careers as an English major at Berry College. This portfolio should be completed during the term just prior to the student’s graduation and must be approved by department faculty. All majors should consult with their advisor, the Department chair, and/or the department’s Curriculum Committee Chair for more information about the portfolio assessment.

English Core
A. Required Courses (9 hours): - ENG 240 - Introduction to Literary Studies (Foundations F4a) 3-0-3

B. Courses in Literary History and Major Authors (12 hours; 6 hours in each area as indicated). The main emphasis in these courses is on the literary genres, concepts of authorship, and modes of discourse and criticism within the period studied. Texts will be studied in their cultural, critical, and aesthetic contexts. Individual course offerings might focus on a particular period, movement, genre, theme, or author or group of authors that falls within the time frame. Topic for each course may vary; courses may be repeated for elective credit in the major (part D) if topic changes. PR: any 200 - level ENG course. 1. C. Alternative Traditions and Contexts (3 hours). Courses that develop around a particular literary theme or tradition not easily contained within discrete literary periods. Some concern for the cultural, theoretical, and critical treatment of the boundaries of that tradition or theme. Where possible, such classes include one or more contemporary works.
