Intermediate Level Proficiency, French

Intermediate-level ability in French demonstrated by satisfactory completion of FRE 200  or higher, or by proficiency testing and a combination of the following:

• FRE 101 - Introduction I to French Language and Culture (Foundations F3c) 4-1-4
• FRE 102 - Introduction II to French Language and Culture (Foundations F3c) 4-1-4
• FRE 200 - French in Review: Language, Culture and History (Intermediate) (Foundations F3c) 4-1-4

Advanced Requirements (22 hours):

• FRE 406 - Senior Project 1 credit hour
• At least fifteen hours of 300-400-level French courses taken at Berry College and/or as part of an approved study abroad program in a French-speaking country.  The French adviser, World Languages Department Chair, and International Experiences director will work with students to tailor a beneficial study abroad experience if appropriate.
   
• Up to six hours of 300-400 level courses in other disciplines which highlight French history, culture, philosophy, art or other discipline.  Preapproved courses include:

• ART 310 - Nineteenth-Century Art 3-0-3
• POL 320 - Comparative Politics of Western Europe 3-0-3
• HIS 311 - Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages 3-0-3
• HIS 332 - Nineteenth-Century Europe 3-0-3
• HIS 333 - Twentieth-Century Europe 3-0-3
• HIS 347 - Military History of the Western World 3-0-3
• MUS 215 - Appreciation of Music (Foundations F4b) 3-0-3
• MUS 348 I - Literature and History of Music II 3-0-3
• PHI 352 - Early Modern Philosophy 3-0-3

  Please note that these courses may have prerequisites.  Students should work with their adviser to choose appropriate prerequisite courses.

  Other courses will be considered to fulfill this degree requirement. These courses must dedicate no less than one-third of the semester to the study of French-related topics.  They must be pre-approved by the department, and additional assignments may be required at the French program’s discretion.
