Biology Major: Cellular and Biomedical Concentration, B.S.

The Cellular and Biomedical (CB) concentration is designed for students wanting a curriculum that focuses on cell and molecular biology of prokaryotic and/or eukaryotic organisms. The CB emphasis is on genomic, molecular, and cellular processes that control biological function and disease. This emphasis is particularly valueable for students pursuing cellular/molecular/biomedical graduate studies or professional programs such as medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physician assistant, or physical therapy. Note: students may not earn both a major and minor in Biology.

Core Requirements for Biology (13hrs)
Take the following courses:
Cellular and Biomedical Biology Electives (22hrs)
Students majoring in biology with a cellular and biomedical (CB) emphasis must take a minimum of 22 credit hours of elective Biology courses. Four of the six elective courses must be selected from courses listed for CB emphasis: BIO 206 , BIO 207 , BIO 300 , BIO 301 , BIO 304 , BIO 330 I , BIO 335 I , BIO 352 I , BIO 353 I , BIO 436 I , BIO 451 , CHM 341 , CHM 475 I . At least 4 BIO electives must have a lab. The remaining BIO elective courses may be selected from any of the 30+ biology courses offered at the BIO 206 level or above. Some CG electives are offered on every other year basis while others are offered every year. Students are encouraged to select elective courses that best align with their interestes, career goals, and/or graduate school admission requirements. A maximum of 3hrs of BIO 498 credit can be counted towards total hours of required elective credit.
Additional Science and Mathematics Requirements (20hrs)
Chemistry
16hrs at the CHM 108 level or higher.
Mathematics
4 hours required (MAT 120 or MAT 201 ). MAT 201 simultaneously fulfills Foundations F2a and biology requirements. If MAT 120 is chosen, then it is strongly recommended that MAT 111 be taken to fulfill Foundations F2a for students pursuing graduate programs.
