Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Academic Programs

The Wildlife, Ecology, and Conservation (WEC) concentration is designed for students who desire a curriculum that focuses on animals/plants and environmental interactions.  This emphasis is particulary valuable for students aspiring to enter careers or graduate programs that focus on wildlife, environmental biology, and/or conservation.  Note: students may not earn both a major and minor in Biology.

Wildlife, Ecology, and Conservation Biology Electives (22hrs)

Students majoring in biology with a wildlife, ecology, and conservation (WEC) emphasis must take six elective courses representing a minimum of 22 credit hours. Four of the six elective courses must be selected from WEC concentration courses: BIO 302 , BIO 303 , BIO 305 , BIO 307 , BIO 311 I , BIO 313 I , BIO 320 , BIO 330 I , BIO 332 I , BIO 334 , BIO 339 I , BIO 345 I , BIO 383 , BIO 384 , BIO 405 , BIO 415 I , BIO 455 , BIO 465 I , EVS 310 I , EVS 320 .  The remaining elective courses may be selected from any of the 30+ biology courses offered.  A maximum of 3hrs of BIO 498  credit can be counted towards total elective credit.  Students are encouraged to select WEC courses that best align with their interests, career goals, and/or graduate school admission requirements.  WEC elective courses are generally offered biannually.  BIO 305  is offered every fall term since it is a prerequisite for many WEC courses.

Additional Science and Mathematics Requirements (20hrs)

Chemistry

16hrs at the CHM 108  level and higher

Mathematics

4 hours required (MAT 120  or MAT 201 ).  MAT 201  simultaneously fulfills Foundations F2a and biology requirements. If MAT 120  is chosen, then it is strongly recommended that MAT 111  be taken to fulfill Foundations F2a for students pursuing graduate programs.
