Secondary Education Major (6-12 or P-12), B.S.

Students interested in teaching in grades 6-12 should complete a dual major in secondary education and one of the following approved majors: Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Science, English, History, Mathematics, and Physics. A student may not earn a major in 6-12/Secondary Education without an accompanying dual major.

Students interested in teaching in grades P-12 (preschool through twelfth grade) should complete a dual major in P-12 education one of the following approved majors: Art, French, German, Spanish, Creative Technologies, or Computer Science. A student may not earn a major in P-12/Secondary Education without an accompanying dual major.

Note: Music Education majors can also receive P-12 certification. Please see requirements for the Music Education, B.Mus.  major. 

Major Requirements (35 hours):

Special Qualifications


Students are encouraged to take EDU 102  Orientation to Teacher Education. 

Students should fulfill their Foundations F4c requirement with PSY 101  Introduction to Psychology. 

Students are encouraged to take EDU 202  Field Experience Practicum any semester for which they do not have another education course with field experience. 

It is strongly recommended that all secondary and P-12 education students take EDU 260  Technology Applications for Educators or a computer class within their content area. 

SCI 489  Seminar in STEM Education may be taken instead of the lab for EDU 489.

 

Second Methods Course:

English majors will also take EDU 430 .

Art majors will also take ART 304 .

World language majors will also take FLA 400 .

Mathematics majors will also take MAT 340 .

Science majors will also take EDU 341 .

Creative Technologies majors will take CRT 340 .

Computer Science majors will take CSC 369 .
